Eventing team and klimke on course for victory

The german eventing team is now within reach of the olympic gold medal and is leading before the final jumping competition on tuesday. “This is a great result for the whole team,” commented melzer: “all five without jumping faults, what more do we want?.”
With 124.70 penalty points, the german team is in the lead. Great britain (130.20) and sweden (131.40) are next in line. In the individual classification, ingrid klimke from munster is in first place with abraxxas (39.30), but on a par with the swedish rider sara algotsson-ostholt with wega. World champion michael jung (horb) moved up to fourth place with sam (40.60).
Klimke was “simply overjoyed” after her fabulous ride. After more than half of the way she was still behind the ideal time before she caught up enormously. “In the first part there was no time to think,” reported the 44-year-old: “the course makes incredible demands on the balance of horse and rider.”Especially low-hanging aste storten riding her 15-year-old gelding abraxxas: “i’m so glad that braxi is so small.”
The gold-waiter was even a little bit too fast. Sara algotsson-ostholt was ahead of klimke with wega after the jump, because the swedish rider was closer to the target time of 10:03 minutes on the 5728 meter long course.
World champion jung also worked his way far ahead with a sovereign ride. “My motto was to ride as fast as possible and take as few risks as necessary,” said jung. “The time was very tight.”
Sandra auffarth (ganderkesee) is also still doing well. The 25-year-old with opgun louvo remained only just above the optimum time and reported: “in the last minute the horse became tired, so I took the tempo out so as not to take any risks.”The olympic debutant was nevertheless “very, very satisfied” with her performance.
Dirk schrade from sprockhovel ranks 17th with king artus (50.60). Site. He was suitably disappointed. “It was incredibly difficult,” commented the 34-year-old after his much too slow ride with king artus, who had lost a horseshoe on the way. “It was quite a bit of work,” explained schrade: “i had to be careful in the turns, it wasn’t already.”
Peter thomsen could be more satisfied. After the 51-year-old from lindewitt had fluffed in the dressage, the cross-country ride with barby went much better. “There are three cliffs on the course: the time, the bumps and the curves,” described the senior of the german olympic team. About the drop after about two-thirds of the course, thomas said: “at obstacle 20 you feel like a bungee jumper. That tickles the belly.”
The landing ride was overshadowed by several crashes. Canadian hawley bennett-awad was the worst hit and had to be taken to hospital. Their condition was stable, it said shortly before the end of the competition.
