Monument conservator on the trench construction site

As early as the neolithic period, in the fourth and third millennia BC, the gentle hill between greiendorf and the B 470 was already inhabited. There is no doubt about this for martin nadler, central franconia's consultant for soil monuments at the state office for the preservation of historical monuments. Because this was the case, the historic preservation authority has been involved from the very beginning when the road from sterpersdorf via greiendorf to the B 470 is now being expanded.

As planned, work is already in full swing. From their point of view, the construction company is lucky on the first construction section between sterpersdorf and greiendorf. This has been approved by the archaeologists for expansion, reports valentin maier, whose engineering firm is planning the project and is also the construction manager.

Learned from the newspaper
“We have to adhere to the requirements of historic preservation”, says maier “that's the law”. If traces of human settlements are found, one has to look further.

Martin nadler criticizes in this case that the planning had already been approved before his authority found out about it. It was only through newspaper articles that one became aware of the building project. The earthworks for the new route between greiendorf and the B 470 have now been brought forward in order to be able to react to archaeological finds in good time. If the two archaeologists discover any traces, they will be uncovered, recorded on maps, excavated and presumably put in the hochstadt museum of local history.

Martin nadler does not believe that the activities of the experts on soil monuments will cause delays in the tight schedule of the trench builders. The work on the plateau has been brought forward for this purpose. The additional costs for the archaeologists – who, by the way, are from a private company – must be borne by the city of hochstadt.

Successful local historians
The site of this early settlement came to the attention of the state office for the preservation of historical monuments through discoveries made by the hobby archaeologists of the hochstadter heimatverein. Fur nadler standing traces of houses and corresponding finds that can be precisely classified in time. “From the neolithic through all metal-age periods”, says preservationist nadler. These are shards that were found in the fields of this hugel in the aischgrund region of germany.

The timetable for the 1.2 to 1.3 million-euro project is tight. While the construction company wants to press ahead, valentin maier expects to be able to complete the trench between sterpersdorf and the B 470 in september.
